I know fish oil (EPA/DHA being the health star components) is not as romantic as two star-crossed lovers, BUT, EPA/DHA has so many health benefit, it wouldn’t hurt to think of in it in “romantic health terms”, it’s THAT GOOD for your health. I know you’ve already heard of the the many health benefits of EPA/DHA from my husband Randy’s “Virtual Check-Ups”, the most recent mentioning the brain health benefits of a regular intake of EPA/DHA. I would also like to put in a few words for one of my favorite food sources and supplement. It helps me to think of the right amount of EPA/DHA, in the form of foods or supplements, as being a “fire extinguisher” for inflammation in the body, in non-chemical terms, but it facilitates an understanding of the importance of it. Remember that sustained inflammation is the root of many chronic diseases like Alzheimer’s, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and cancer. So among EPA/DHA’s health benefits are the possible prevention of these chronic diseases. It also is great for skin health, leaving you more youthful looking. In addition, one of my favorite benefits of EPA/DHA is the alleviation of arthritic pain. I sustained injuries to both of my feet from running in my earlier years, I participated in many hours of running to train for fun runs and triathalons, but I totally ignored the pain in my feet (which by the way, are totally flat). I don’t run anymore, but I still exercise everyday and a daily dose of EPA/DHA is part of my regimen for pain alleviation. So how much should you take per day? I tell my clients to get the equivalent of 1-2 grams of EPA/DHA per day, if strictly for health maintenance. My top fish choices for EPA/DHA and their content are as follows:
Alaskan Salmon; 5 oz = 2 gram of EPA/DHA
Fresh Albacore Tuna-6 oz. baked-2.2 grams of EPA/DHA
Tuna in a can with water-6 oz. =.46 grams of EPA/DHA
Herring (Pacific)- 3 oz. = 1.81 grams of EPA/DHA
Sardines-2.5 oz. = 1 gram of EPA/DHA
Trout- baked- 3 oz. = .84 grams of EPA/DHA
My family and I consume EPA/DHA food sources at least once per week, but, that is not enough to get the great health benefits. We rely on daily high quality (mercury-free) fish oil supplements. I also recommend to my clients (and my family and friends), if suffering from any type of arthritic pain (or old injuries), to take more EPA/DHA, to get that extra anti-inflammatory boost. Discover the “romantic health benefits” of daily EPA/DHA, not exactly a Romeo and Juliet saga, but, I think, the next best thing.
